Whether brewed traditionally or improvised, the mate ritual is sacred. All you need is yerba mate, hot (not boiling) water, a gourd, and a bombilla (metal straw). What follows is a traditional way to prepare mate (using a gourd and bombilla):


Traditional Process (Gourd and Bombilla)

  • Fill the gourd ⅔ full of yerba mate.

  • Cover the gourd against your palm and give it 3-5 good shakes to get out any extra powder. 

  • Tilt the gourd so that you create a slope of mate inside the gourd.

  • Pour room-temperature water on the hollow side of the gourd to dampen the leaves.

  • Insert the bombilla, covering the tip with your thumb, under the base of the leaves, and pour hot water into the gourd (~70–80°C).

  • Enjoy sipping and replace the water as needed.


But with modern-day demands, it's sometimes difficult to indulge in the traditional ritual of consuming yerba mate. Instead, you can also drink it via many other methods to fit your lifestyle:

  • French Press: Add 2-3 tablespoons of mate for every 8oz of drink you plan to make. Add a little bit of room-temperature water to wet the leaves. Add hot (not boiling water) and let it steep for 10-20 minutes. Press, pour, and enjoy!

  • Cold Brew: Steep yerba mate overnight in cold water to make a naturally herbaceous, mellow drink.
